Regenerative medicine, otherwise known as biologic therapy, is changing the orthopedic and sports medicine field. Biologic therapy is a relatively new concept aimed at helping patients potentially heal after experiencing an injury without undergoing surgery. Regenerative medicine options, such as platelet rich plasma (PRP), stem cell therapy and bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC), repair and improve joint function at a biological level. Dr. Mark Getelman is able to offer these new biologic treatment options to select patients living in the Van Nuys, Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks and Los Angeles, California communities.

Dr. Getelman offers biologic therapy to treat a select number of orthopedic and sports injuries, including:

  • Tendon injuries
  • Ligament injuries
  • Muscle injuries
  • Joint arthritis
  • Tendonitis
  • Bursitis

Patients who are ideal candidates for regenerative medicine include:

  • Physically active patients with chronic pain
  • Physically active patients with acute injuries
  • Patients suffering from a degenerative condition, such as arthritis
  • Patients who do not find relief after non-surgical, conservative measures.

Biologic therapy, such as platelet rich plasma (PRP), stem cell therapy and bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC), is an out-patient procedure performed under local anesthesia and is minimally invasive. PRP utilizes a patient’s own blood and injects the blood back into the injured area after the platelets are concentrated and isolated. Stem cell therapy injects a high concentration of stem cells into the injured area to help a patient’s body heal. BMAC contains growth and healing factors similar to what is found in PRP plus an additional concentration of pluripotent stem cells. The pluripotent stem cells are harvested from the pelvis of the patient in some cases and may help the body heal and regenerate more quickly.

The science behind regenerative medicine continues to evolve. Many orthopedic specialists are treating patients at a biologic level. Dr. Getelman and his colleagues are actively involved in treating patients with biologic therapy, tracking their outcomes and will ultimately determine the ideal patients who will most directly benefit by this advancing technology.
